Once each month, check the washing machine’s hoses for signs of wear and make sure all connections are tight.

Preventive Measures

There are some one-time actions you can take to prevent serious plumbing problems in your laundry room. Plumbers recommend installing a flood alarm to alert you to an overflow or burst pipe from the washing machine, laundry tub or hot water tank. Check pipes for signs of leaks, such as moisture, drip marks or rust stains. Keep the hot water setting at no higher than 120° Fahrenheit to reduce the risk of accidental burns and prevent damage to clothing and rubber washers connected to the machine’s hoses. Once each month, pour a pail of water into the waste water drain to prevent sewer gases from rising up into your home.
